Definition | A unit, named for Sir Godfrey Hounsfield, on a scale of radiopacity. On the Hounsfield scale air is defined as -1000 HU and distilled water is 0 HU. Fat, being less dense than water, measures below 0 HU. Soft tissues typically measure 0 - 300 HU, bone measures 700-3000 HU, and metals measure in the thousands. |
