Definition | The loss of calcium from calcified tissues, characterized in teeth by areas of white, splotchy surface opacity. Caused by the acid from plaque buildup, it can occur in areas that are hard to clean, such as around braces or crowns, or between teeth. It can be easily mistaken for hypercalcification, which is similar in appearance, but with a harder surface. |
