Definition | A chemical compound that releases hydrogen ions when dissolved in water. Acids have a pH value less than 7. Used in the laboratory to clean oxide layers and surface contaminants from precious metals, and to etch non-precious metals and porcelain. Also used to etch tooth enamel. |
