Pronunciation | GOEL-dun pruh-POR-shun |
Variations | divine proportion, golden section, golden ratio |
Definition | 1. The division of a whole into two parts such that the ratio of the smaller part to the larger is equal to the ratio of the larger part to the whole. 2. An esthetic concept used to describe the relative proportions of the central and lateral incisors, using the golden ratio of 1.618... That is, in the space occupied by a central and a lateral, the central will take approximately 3/5 of the space and the lateral will take 2/5. A common simplification of the rule is to consider the lateral as 2/3 the size of the central. |
