Term | alveolar resorption |
Pronunciation | al-VEE-uh-lur ree-SORP-shun |
Variations | ridge resorption |
Definition | Shrinkage of the alveolar ridge that occurs after the natural teeth have been removed. Because of the shape of the alveolar ridges, resorption occurs more on the lingual of the lower and the buccal of the upper, causing the mandibular arch to widen with age and the maxillary arch to narrow. |
